Do Sports Drinks Make You Fat?

Welcome to another installment of FJ’s fine fitness tips for your restless soul. This one is sure to be a SHOCKER. Some might even become furious at a certain company, because there are some facts that were never brought to light. (That’s what I like to do… Bring power to the peeps!)

So here’s what I’m babbling on about… Sports Drinks. Do you drink them? You know the ones I’m talking about right? I don’t want to give exact names here, but they usually end in “ADE”… And have something to do with aliGATORs.

And if you do drink them, have you ever bothered to read the nutrition label? The bottom line is that if you consume a  “sports drink” before, during or after working out… You’ve pretty much wasted your time.

Not all of it… But most of it. That’s right, you might as well have stayed home and watched another lame-ass episode of LOST.

Unless you are an IRON MAN long-distance runner, these sports drinks provide absolutely NO VALUE to an average person’s 1 hour workout session in the gym, or at home. The main culprit is the amount of SUGAR! Get this ok, for every 8oz serving… You are taking in about 16g of sugar on average.

Now the average bottle of this stuff is 16oz, so that’s a grand total of 32g of sugar… Which is about the same amount you get in a can of COKE! You might as well drink that, it tastes better.

Seriously… drinking 32g of sugar during a workout constitutes as borderline insanity. The only other person who needs that much sugar is a body builder, or a guy trying to get huge. The massive amount of sugar spikes their insulin levels so that when they take a protein shake, the insulin will help transport the protein right to the muscles ASAP.

Even then, I’d rather use natural grape juice with a scoop of maltodextrin instead of gulping down a huge bottle of aliGATOR ADE. It’s best to stick with a cold bottle of filtered water.

Oh, and don’t try to be all clever and drink ones that are “sugar-free”… You already know the kind of trouble aspartame can put you through, so avoid that sh*t like the plague.

Those lame sugar substitutes can also cause some seriously funky situations to occur inside your gastrointestinal tract while throwing off your hormone balance. Doesn’t that sound fun?

If you want a really great pre-workout drink, I’ll give you the recipe for the one that I make along with my Head-Start mini course. The recipe is one of the 3 bonus tips emailed right to your inbox… So you won’t even have to visit my blog. Convenient? Oh yeah! Grab your copy of the mini-course HERE.

That’s all for now. Stay fresh!

I just wanted to let sports drink fans know that All Sport Natural Zero is coming out in April 2009. This sports drink is sweetened with stevia instead of sugar and is all natural and CALORIE FREE!! It contains essential vitamins, low sodium and high potassium.
