So recently, health.com awarded Jillian Michaels “America’s Healthiest Body” or some shit, and after thinking about it, I figured it was pretty well justified. Now, are there healthier women out there? Yeah probably (holla at these clowns Jody), but then I realized that it’s also a popularity contest. Too bad I don’t live in the US, or I woulda snatched that shit away from her, and had a beer while looking smashing as ever.
Regardless, I would like to give her a big congrats on that award. Maybe even a big hug. And a squeeze. A little tickle? Yeah it’s no secret that I think Jillian kicks major ass. Shit, I get emails all the time from people telling me I’m the male version of her (gay!), or that my writing reminds them of her (cool!) or that if me and her ever join forces, they would sign up for our classes in an instant.
Sadly, that last part will never happen… I just don’t think me and her would ever actually get along. I wouldn’t take her shit, and she wouldn’t take mine. So it’s best that I stay me, and she stays Jillian, sorry folks.
[Just as a side note, I have nothing against gays. In fact, you guys party harder than anyone I’ve ever seen, so props to that]
Alright back to the point of this whole shebang. After giving her the award, Health.com interviewed Jillian, muttering general babble such as “so how does it feel to be awarded America’s Healthiest Body?” etc. You know, standard stuff where they want her to praise the site for giving her some recognition. Well, it was all standard till they asked her the following question “Is there an area of your life where you are undisciplined?”
And that’s where my lovely dropped a fucking BOMB and said “the only thing I would tell you is fitness”
HAHA! Boy, I would have loved to see their faces. See it’s not that I was surprised she said this, not even slightly, what I found funny was how surprised Health.com was. Think about it, they just awarded this woman’s body as one of the healthiest in the COUNTRY and now she says her fitness is undisciplined? Ouch.
The thing you need to realize is that discipline is fuelled by motivation and its NOT a constant stream of awesomeness that you experience everyday. If you were to take the concept of motivation and visualize it, it would look like those spikes you see in a heart monitor, not a sloping line heading upwards. No matter who you are, you just cannot be motivated 100% of the time… it’s too much stimulus for your body to handle constantly. Think of being on speed 24/7… people would think you’re a damn whack job.
This is why people seek external sources of motivation such as Jillian (or myself) or music or whatever happens to get them off their fucking asses and into “go” mode when they need it. What you need to do is find your sources that you can tap into. Notice I said sources, not “a source”, because having one source is a sure fire way of exhuasting it in no time flat. Once you have a bunch, cycle through them and use them when needed.
I have massive playlists of songs I like to listen to while in the gym. I have supplements that pick me up if my day has been exhausting, I have a shit load of books with bookmarked pages which inspire me, I have a folder filled with hand-picked videos that get me pumped, I have an entire notebook in my OneNote program with articles that I snatched from all over the web which I read and finally, I have people I associate with that help me step it up a notch… each and every time.
This list of things are my fucking lifeline, without them I’m pretty sure I would be a chode that got nothing done. I mean sure, I wake up in the morning with a purpose but I’m also human, which means some times I just can’t get anything out of myself. This is when I turn to the things that get me moving. I’m not sure if Jillian has a list like that, but I know one thing she does have (this is gona be a shocker) a trainer!

I have two sources of motivation and two variations of them.
1) Music
– Motivational music such as “Don’t stop believing” by Journey.
– Body Work albums
2) Photos
– Ripped male bodies (will look like)
– Beautiful womens
I also recommend collection information for a notebook I call book of dreams.

FJ, thx for the shout out!!! Yup, Jillian is in awesome shape but a lot younger than me too!
I wish I knew back in my 20′s & even early 30′s what I know now! BUT, I get what she said AND what you wrote about.
Even for the most dedicated & hard core of us all, we still have to find what motivates us to do what we do. FJ, you know yours.
Me, yes, I have tons of mags & fitness stuff I read & it motivates me to want to try new things & moves BUT it also motivates me to want to keep up with the younger ones as long as I can. Yes, I know there will be a time when the body will only do so much & in fact, I have modified due to that in some aspects of my program. But in others, I pushed harder to fight it.
What motivates me is to just try to be the fittest I can for my age & what my body will let me do. It is just an internal thing. I think some it may come from being a fat kid & being teased, other parts are due to although I am not ugly, I am average looking & fitness is an area I can try to excel at. I may not get in the mags or be a fitness model like I want to BUT I still can do a lot more than others my age…. other motivations are that is just feels better to be fit & strong. It is complicated as they say!
Again, FJ, THX!

@Stefan
Hmm Journey, is a solid choice. And yes, male bodies. Sounds a little homo but hey, Seeing what other guys have achieved is motivating, no doubt. What guy hasn’t looked at Arnie and said “I want to look like that”.
As for sexy hot girls. Yeah, that’s practically a given. Good list.

@Jody
Yeah she’s young but that doesn’t matter yo. Let’s see if she stays this way when she hits 52, then we can talk. Don’t under credit yourself.
And thanks for the complicated explanation. My head’s spinning.
Only women…

Yes, gawd forbid Jillian is human. Let’s make a joke out of having flaws. I think her motivation are her clients and fans. Maybe they are the source of inspiration that keep her going. She was a fat kid, and sorry, those memories will always be haunting of never wanting to be that way again. I have read her books, and her own personal struggles, and if people want to put her down for creating success and popularity at something she herself struggled with and now is passionate about, I guess that’s society’s way of saying once again – Kudos for doing good for yourself, but boo on you for cashing in on it.
That’s why a lot of people that have lost a lot of weight become experts, trainers, health consultants, because it’s a daily reminder to them of what they once were. Can’t fault her for being vulnerable and being honest in what her weaknesses are. She’s very disciplined and very educated in a lot of areas, and for me, yes, I’m a fan, so I’m going to defend her. She’s MY inspiration in knowing her whole story, and I’ll always look to her to kick my ass!! LOL

Nicely put Cher. yeah I’d let her kick my ass any day. Though I’d justify them as love-taps.

You hit the nail on the head “motivation is NOT a constant stream of awesomeness that you experience everyday.” This is going to be in my new and improved speech for clients who come in whining and complaining about lack of motivation.
Sometimes the drama people conjure up about working out takes more energy than their actual workouts.
For me it’s about having goals that have nothing to do with my body. I find the less I focus on having a perfect body the more motivated I am to workout and the more perfect my body gets. My current source of motivation is the aerial dance class I’m taking.
Great post. I’m linking to it from my 3 sites!
