Newtopia – A Weight Loss System That Causes Cash Loss?

You know what I never get tired of? Ridiculousness. Thankfully in my field, there is a shit load of ridiculousness that pops up all the time… and I am going to dig into one of these trends today. It’s called Newtopia, and it’s a weight loss system based on genetic testing which guarantees that you’ll lose the weight and keep it off for life. Ok.

First, let’s talk about this name, “Newtopia”. It’s quite possibly the worst name for a weight loss system I’ve ever heard. I don’t know about you, but to me, Newtopia sounds like a drink. A strong alcoholic drink which has me on my ass after a hard night of partying if possible. Either that or some hippie board game… Newtopia – where the game pieces are shot glasses and you see weird shit from playing too much! Wait, do hippies drink? Probably not. Who cares, moving right along.

Once you get past the name, curiosity strikes and you visit their website to see what the monkey business they’re up to. Since you’re reading this, I’ll save you the trouble and explain how it works (at least from what I understand, and if I’m wrong… then bite me). What you do is pay Newtopia $129 for a “personalized profile” which includes an assessment, lifestyle profile, genetics testing, 2 personalized coaching sessions (through web chat I’m guessing) and a program review. Most of this shit is all fluff… I mean if you’re paying $129 for someone to assess your ass and babble with you over a webcam, then you’ve got some mental issues. The money really goes towards genetic testing.

You’re Gonna Test My Jeans?! Rad!

Their genetic testing works like this – they take your saliva, send it to a lab and after 10 days you’ll  be presented with your genetic profile, genetic tendencies and even your mannerisms (wtf?!). Armed with this knowledge, they will create a diet plan for you, online coach you and so on and so forth. How accurate is this genetic testing? I can’t say for certain, but I ain’t paying a hundred-and-twenty-fucking-nine dollars to find out that’s for sure. Still, it looks interesting and could reveal things such as food groups which may not suit you.

Let’s Re-Think This…

Here’s the problem with their model though – in those 10 days in which a normal person would wait for their results, I could help a person drop 3-5lbs, and it’ll cost em HALF of what Newtopia is asking. Truth be told it’s not just me, any competent trainer could help you achieve this. The crazy thing is that it doesn’t stop there, oh no. That $129 is just for the genetic testing and the assessment hoopla… after that you have to pay a monthly fee to keep the service going, and judging from what’s included, I’m guessing it’s gonna scare the wallet. I mean think about it, they send you a wireless pedometer, a wireless scale and assign you a dedicated coach(s) whom you can, apparently, ring up “on demand”. All of that can’t be cheap. [UPDATE: The system works out to $7/day - that's $210 per month! I love it when I'm right. Which is like, all the time.]

Going on a tangent, I think I would ring up my “assigned coach” at 2am and ask if it’s ok to eat a nut-much salad. Just to get my money’s worth. But that’s IF I was out of my mind and paying so much money for results that can be had for so much less.

It’s Got It’s Uses

It’s not all bad though… the pricing might seem ridiculous but I am a huge believer in E-Training. I believe it’s the future and that’s why half my business is based on this model. I know the benefits of constantly having someone there, pushing your ass when necessary first hand… and if you’d like to experience these benefits, give me a shout, failure isn’t an option. I also love technology and personally own a wireless scale, so credit goes to Newtopia for implementing useful tools.

Then there is the fact that there are people who need this kind of specialized testing before they start their weight loss routine – issues with diabetics, thyroid etc. But for everyone else? Give me a break. You don’t need to get your genetics tested… people have been losing weight successfully for years and kept it off through intelligent training programs while building habits under the guidance of a trainer who knows what the fuck they’re talking about.

These new systems that keep coming out always try to get all fancy and shit and that’s precisely why I don’t think they’ll ever work as well as intended. Do you know what happens when you build a machine with more parts than necessary? The reliability nose dives because there is more shit that can go wrong.

The shortest distance from one point to another is a straight line… and that’s the approach I take to fitness. It’s only when I encounter obstacles that I start to get all fancy and take little u-turns and whatever the hell is necessary. Trust me on this though, you don’t need to test your spit in a test tube, a general fit test will do just fine and so will a well-thought out nutrition plan. Newtopia is trying so hard to justify it’s price that to me, it seems like an overkill. I’ll give them one thing though… at least they aren’t as ridiculous as Slimband!

This program is fantastic. Don't listen to a word he's saying. There is no program out there that's designed specifically for you and made to last. It's recommended by experts all over the continent. Every other diet that's recommended is a diet that's recommended to the masses. How can something like that work for YOU when you're different from anyone else?? I'd much rather have something that's meant exactly for me! And the cost? Barely anything! And it's called Newtopia because NEW = Nutrition, Exercise and Weightloss. I'd recommend this program to EVERYONE!! How can you go wrong when there are thousands of satisfied customers! And btw FitJerk (now, THAT sounds like a perfect name!) when you say that you can help a person lose 3-5 lbs in the 10 days that one waits for their genetic reveal - THAT I'd be scared about since the recommended HEALTHY weightloss is 2 lbs/week. Just saying.....

"There is no program out there that’s designed specifically for you and made to last." - Just that sentence alone, makes you sound like a fucking moron.

It's called getting a proper trainer, who WILL in fact, design a program that is made to last and is designed specific to the needs of the client.

The name Newtopia reminds me New Utopia. It seem history repeats itself, sometimes.

I am wandering around looking for some weight loss program that will fit for me. And I am willing to give this a try. Thanks for the posted stuffs here.:)

The program cost me $400... it includes the genetic testing, natural supplements & vitamins, the use of the actiPed and ActiScale (which are quite amazing), the 24 hour support from the newtopia coach, plus 3 scheduled sessions per week, the use of the ActiHealth website and the newtopia website for tracking exercise, nutrition, and other progress (ie. the fit test & measurements).... the program is well laid out and the support from the coach is Awesome. I work long hours and the convenience of this program and the flexibility of the coach work very well for me... I have a BMI of 25.1 - slightly over weight (even when considering my muscle mass)... I have lost 4.5lbs in the two weeks I have been on the program, which is a first for me... I have had trainers, dieticians,/nutrionists, and I have tried weight watchers, body for life etc. etc.... this is the first program that has worked for me. Eventhough I know all of the stuff that they have in the program, the desgin of the prgram makes it easy to do day to day and motivates you to stay on track. This is a great program and this article does not give it enough credit... $400 is not alot of money when it costs about that for 6-7 personal training sessions

yes fitjerk you are absolutely right on this one............. these guys just try to extort money from people who are in such a hurry to lose weight that they don't even assess the authenticity of such programs.

I'm always skeptical of programs like this. I think more of us need to look at the emotional reasons we overeat, rather than the genetic ones, but that just MHO.
(BTW, and completely off-topic, can I ask a favor? I notice you use the word "retard" once in a while. I have 2 kids with special needs, and it really hurts them when they see/hear this word used as an insult. Just a request. Thank you!)

This is a very good post; one that I believe all could benefit from reading. However, I wold like to see an evaluation from the FDA and laboratory testing done.

I enjoyed reading this post and found it to be very interesting.

Great post! I found it very helpful. I have heard something in regard to some peple not beng able to diges certain foods being linked to obesity as well as digestive problems.

I am familiar with this. The cost of the saliva test is nothing to what it really costs you. once you signup it will cost $200 per month guarantee for 3 mon. after yes, after paying for the saliva test $125, which results are nothing more than, you have a tendancy to gain weight, generally , you have to pay $400 all yes before y ou begin. So it will cost you well over $1000 for the 3 months. You don't need someone to tell you to eat # veg's, # fruits, # grains. PEOPLE !!!! COME ON!

I am very disappointed. To say the least. At those flogging this ---- for heaven's sake.

On this we are eye to eye. So many fitness gimmicks to suck people dry, it's no real wonder that when honest fitness professsionals use the simple approach of whole nutrition, exercise and right mindedness, people are skeptical.

I am an existing Newtopia client and I love the service and the results. I have found that the personalized one-on-one coaching combined with the emphasis on nutrition, excercise, and natural health products to be the one thing that actually works for me. I tried other programs and failed. I am losing weight on Newtopia. BTW, the Genetic Test is real cool and did help me understand why I am the way I am and what I need to do about it. Also, eTalk just ran a whole story on Newtopia; you should check it out before you judge – http://watch.ctv.ca/clip294091#clip294091

I did see a segment on the genetic testing.. not this program.. on Dr. Oz.. He had some good things to say about genetic testing & how it relates to the food that "might" work best for you.... he even tested it with audience members & found it pretty good in terms of the gentic testing to how the right food fit with the people BUT again, nothing on this particular program you are reviwing per my recollection.. and that was a bit back & I am 52 & in "the change of life" so who knows..... :-) BUT he did talk to the genetic testing part! That I recall!!!!

Deadlift Mastery Or “How the f*ck do you pull so much?” PART 1

This is a question I’ve been getting a lot lately, and I’m going to start this off by stating that although I’m quite beastly, I am not the best deadlifter ever. Nor do I claim to be. However it wouldn’t shock me if I am, pound for pound, one of...
