Supplement Review: Chocolate Whey Crisps

FJ's Verdict:

Product Name: Whey Crisps (Chocolate)

Availability: Medium (Most Major Online Retailers)

A while back I reviewed the Original Whey Crisps and I absolutely loved that shit. Because of its crunchy and tasteless nature you could pretty much add it to anything (within reason). I started tossing it in my oatmeal, cereal, salad (great crouton replacement), ice cream, yoghurt and most recently it was the prime ingredient in what happened to be the best peanut butter in the world.

Was it expensive? Kinda’. You do pay a slightly premium but remember, specialty protein products aren’t and shouldn’t be used to REPLACE protein powder. It’s meant to augment your daily foods with an extra shot of protein where you normally couldn’t. chocolate whey crisps

I didn’t know you could patent chocolate…

So imagine my over the top reaction when I got an email from BPT Technologies stating that they are about to release a new “chocolate” version of their original Whey Crisps and I was to get a sample tub.

“FUCK YES!”… was my reaction as far as I can recall. Since this is such an original product, I’ll be comparing the new chocolate version to the original and see how everything stacks up. For those that have been living in loneliness… here’s the official description of what this product is all about.

Product Claims:

Whey Crisps make it easy for you to add high quality whey protein isolate to almost any food imaginable. Our Whey Crisps are the #1 choice for making protein based food products. The possibilities are endless and its functionality is superb! Whey protein powder has many disadvantages when it comes to cooking or baking with. It becomes rock hard in very little time, it smells upon baking, and it forms into a sponge like substance in baking goods.

Whey Crisps on the other hand have none of these problems. You can cook, bake, and pretty much do anything you want with whey crisps. Consumers in the past that tried to make protein bars using whey powder and were unsuccessful can now make protein bars using whey crisps and the result is a fantastic tasting, long lasting, protein bar made from whey.

First Impressions:

The packaging is nearly identical to the original with a 2 major changes. One is the obvious “chocolate” flavor mentioned and the other is the drop in grams per serving of protein. The original had 28g/serving where as the chocolate now has 20g/serving. Whey-Protein-Crisp A little disappointing but then you do have to realize that extra ingredients are added to the flavoring process so it’s not JUST protein that you’re getting.

The granuels also have a slightly different shape than the original… resembling tiny little coffee beans instead of mini cylinders. After opening the bottle I stuck my nose in there to see if I could get any chocolatey whiffles… nope. Gary Vaynerchuk would say that this stuff is “aromatically challenged”.

But that’s ok because once you pop some in your mouth its all aces baby. There was no question that you could eat the original crisps right from the container, but it was always too bland. The chocolate Whey Crisps taste like coco puffs… they just have less sweetness and more crunchy-ness to them. I LIKE that, a lot. Good job BPT, this stuff fucking rules by itself.

Let’s dive in further to see what you get…

When looking at the ingredient list, it’s re-assuring to see that whey isolate is mentioned first… not the cheaper alternative “concentrate”. So you are getting what you’re paying for. There are plenty of companies out there that will market their protein powders with the name “iso” in there to make you THINK that you’re getting the good stuff. But all you have to do is turn to the ingredient list and you’ll see that it’s actually mostly concentrate (50% or more) with a bit of isolate thrown in (40% or less). I don’t know about you, but that’s called FALSE FUCKING ADVERTISING. I send hate mail to these clowns. BPT won’t be getting such mail.

Now to make this stuff sugar-free they have decided to jump in the Splenda bandwagon (i.e sucralose). As my readers know, this isn’t my first choice… it would be nice if they used Stevia.

Real World Results:

Well you already know they taste awesome right out of the container, and they taste even BETTER when combined with treats such as muffins, pancakes, cookies and brownies. But on the other hand, because of it’s chocolaty nature, these Whey Crisps can’t be used in as many situations as it’s original brother. What we have here is the jack of all trades V.S specialty debate. Which product you side with now becomes your choice.

Conclusion:

Since I’ve already reviewed the original product extensively, there is no reason to go on further. So let’s warp this up.

Pros

  • Tastes great straight out of the container (better than the original)
  • Works great in “dessert” and “treat” type recipes
  • Won’t exactly break the bank at $0.97 per serving
  • Makes a great snack. Just throw some inside a ziplock bag and off you go
  • Can be used to make the best peanut butter in the world. Bar none.
  • Has 3g Glutamine per serving (helps with recovery)

Cons

  • Only 20g per scoop where as the original was 28g
  • For the same price, you get slightly less product (2.23 lbs vs 3lbs for the original)
  • Can’t be used in certain recipes such as burgers, meat loaf etc.

Overall I’m happy and yet sad at the same time. I’m happy because this stuff rocked my world and I’m gona give it a solid 4 outta 5 stars. But I’m sad because I’m almost out, which means I’ll have to patiently wait for my next tub to ship. I hate waiting…

Cool FJ! I still want to get the original flavor but I hate that shipping stuff. I wish they had a place near me that sold this product! Sounds yummy but I think I would use the original flavor more….. lucky you, got some for free! :-)

Did you try them in PB yet?

Yeah shipping can be quite a bitch but you’re in the US, so it shouldn’t be that bad. I haven’t tried this one in PB yet, but my mouth salivates just thinking about it. I made such a huge fucking batch of the original that I haven’t finished it yet… so once that’s done with lookout for the update.

I don’t personally use anything like this (yet), but if I did I would probably go for the original. I wouldn’t want to have to think about what I add it to. I’d rather just throw it in with anything I can think of. I also like to get more bang for my buck. Chocolate is nice, but it’s not necessary.

I got a question though. You seem fanatic about them, so why the 4.3 rating on the originals? I understand the rating here as you get a little less protein and less overall product, plus you can’t use it as much, but why are the originals only a 4.3? I looked for the cons and I couldn’t see any in your post…is that just because of the premium you have to pay for them?

Well you don’t have to think too much but I get what you’re saying.
And yea my enthusiasm towards Whey Crisps is well documented but a review is a review and awarding a 5 star would mean it’s a perfect product… which it is not. It’s close, but not quite. The major con stopping it from a perfect 5 is definitely price, just like it was with the LBA Liquid Beef Aminos from AAEFX – An excellent product but I had to give it a 3.9 since I consider it a “specialty” item and it’s premium. It’s not for everyone, but for those who DO use it will be well rewarded.

I also rate everything much more harshly than the average review site. As long as I get enough of the product, I test it out for a few weeks at the minimum before writing a review so that brings out the minor faults in them.

That’s cool. I like that you don’t give out 5 stars. I hate most review sites because they rate stuff 5 stars when it’s definitely not. It’s good to know I can trust your reviews. (How would you rate the Flawless Fitness Book?) :)

        Two more things:

        1. What’s wrong with the shipping? I live in Canada so will I have problems trying to get some of this stuff?

        &

        2. Have you ever tried out Prograde’s stuff? I know that there are a ton of people out there who recommend them (Vince Delmonte, Joel Marion, Isabel De Los Rios, etc.) and say they are top notch. I checked and didn’t find any reviews from you, but I’d be interested in seeing what you think of them.

Nothings wrong with the shipping, I’m in Can and its fine. Jody just has a personal hate for shipping costs. And ProGrade… to be honest when I looked at their ingredients… it’s nothing special. I really don’t see why people are going nucking futs for this shit but hey, I’m a fair man so I’ll reserve my final judgement till I can actually try them out.

I’ll see if I can get a hold of some.

Alright. I’ll probably go ahead and try some of these then.

In regards to Prograde, the one I’m most interested in is the Krill Oil one as that’s the one people seem to rave about the most.

First of all, I love that my anti-spam word is douche…

Secondly, I think I may have to try these out… I know you went apeshit when you tried the original ones in peanut butter. Sadly, I can’t even get through a 3 hour lecture anymore without thinking about what my protein intake for the day has been, and what I’m gonna do to get that next serving in, haha.

Yeah man, I do what I can to keep the spammers away you know?

And yeah these are pretty portable, though one problem I can see is that they are so fucking crunchy that you might not be able to hear the lecture. It’s like when you were a kid trying to eat your cocopuffs while watching Sat morning cartoons… just doesn’t work.

These bars are geared toward fueling the body with the energy that you needs to maintain normal daily activities. During weight loss attempts skipping a meal will slow the metabolism but if a protein bar is utilized to replace the meal than the body will maintain its metabolism.

I love them both – the original and the chocolate. Try to have them both in the house. Since the choco are a bit sweet for me – I mix 1:1 choco and natural – then place them in small ziplock bags 1 scoop per bag – yielding app 25 gr prot per bag, app 115 cal. A great snack on the go – not too sweet – and quite feeling – and they do not spoil. Very light – I keep the bags (1-2 ) in my purse, the car – and have as needed when I cna not stop to get a good meal (or get hungry).
