The Placebo Effect On Sports Supplements

.

Recently I read a kick-ass article over at Wired on how the effects of Placebo is getting stronger and stronger in humans… resulting in drug companies having to ditch the testing and production of new drugs because they usually do not fair better (sometimes worse) than a lame ol’ sugar pill. How incredibly insane is that?

Now when it comes to the pharmaceutical industry… I for one, am fucking glad. Why? Because it means there will be fewer drugs on the market. You see, for FDA to approve of a pharmaceutical drug, there needs to be proof that it works better than it’s placebo counterpart. This just goes to show the substantial capacity for the human body to evolve and actually heal itself without the use of external chemical substances. Here’s a quote from the article…

“The fact that an increasing number of medications are unable to beat sugar pills has thrown the industry into crisis. The stakes could hardly be higher. In today’s economy, the fate of a long-established company can hang on the outcome of a handful of tests.”

Love it!

Then I got thinking… is this all sunshine and lollipops? Nope, because where we have progress, we have an exploit for opportunity. For one, drug companies are clearly upset by what this shit-show is doing to their profit margins and are therefore looking to find drugs that will negate the effects of placebo in patients… which I think is absolutely fucked. But what can you expect from these money hungry morons that have to constantly bend over to please their share holders? The good news here is that doctors are now combining the power of placebo with normal drugs in the best interest of the patient… a good thing.

“Nearly half of the doctors polled in a 2007 survey in Chicago admitted to prescribing medications they knew were ineffective for a patient’s condition—or prescribing effective drugs in doses too low to produce actual benefit—in order to provoke a placebo response.”

But then we have the supplement companies. I mean seriously, if I was Supplement Company-X and I read this article… my entrepreneurial business sense would tingle my dingle and I’d pump out even more useless powders backed by out-of-this-world marketing claims. Why? Because on some level it might actually work. Customers might actually start to “feel” the benefits… even thought it’s just the evolution of the all mighty placebo effect. But in reality I wouldn’t, because my rep is worth more than a tub of over-priced powder.

There is a reason 99.9% of supplements DON’T go through a double-blind placebo controlled test before being released on the market… it’s just not required. This is how you and I get graced with completely worthless products that end up being scams such as: acai berry, resveratrol, L-Arginine for “nitric oxide pumps” etc. Have you ever bothered to look beyond the label claims? If not, you should be reading my supplement reviews (now that’s what I call a smooth plug).

Back to the point – I think it’s time for supplements to be tested… it should be a god damn requirement. In fact, the only supplement which went through a legit study that was pretty credible was Vitargo (as far as I can recall). It completely dominated it’s placebo counterpart, which is why I still use it to this very day… even IF I have to pay a premium for it.

And to all the little companies that actually produce the goods – don’t be scared. I mean, if you are pumping out shit that works, then this change should only BENEFIT your small line up of products by giving them exposure, not hinder it’s success.

The Consequences

So what will happen if sports supplements ARE required to go through such testing? Well for one, I presume they will get a lot more expensive. This process definitely takes up time… and more importantly, money.

They won’t be able to throw together some random mix of powder, apply a shiny label to it and ship it out the door.

They won’t be able to set up scam sites and make completely absurd claims.

They won’t be able to sell it with such widespread ease that we enjoy today.

All of this will, without a doubt, hurt their bottom line… and we’ll be the ones who will have to pay for it. So the question is, are you willing to pay extra for something that’s tested and works? Or is the state of the supplement industry just fine, and you’d rather do your own research and testing? Time to sound off your horns…

I’m definitely willing to pay a premium for stuff I know works. Personally I’d rather have something that I know is killer and pay 4X as much than try out a bunch of cheaper products that may or may not (generally not) work.

I think the companies should have to go through the proper testing, even if they do have to charge more for their stuff. The benefits far outweigh the consequences.

And really, I think it would only hurt the bottom line of the companies who are full of it and are just trying to screw people anyway.

Real companies that are producing good stuff can charge for it and many people will be willing to pay a premium for the better products. They can charge more for their products & still be able to reach their audiences.

Heck, if a company went and showed it’s extensive tests and the results and proved that their product kicks butt, they could charge ridiculous prices for it and it would probably sell like hotcakes because people want stuff that actually works.

    That’s my opinion.

Really interesting post & have read lots on this placebo effect! Crap, people are already wasting plenty of money as it is SO if they by less but the products are actually worth the extra money, they might end up saving money by only buying what they need & will actually help & dumping the crap.

Honestly, when I was bodybuilding way back when, I took a bunch of stuff. I went off of it when I went back to my plain ole crazy workouts with the exception of 1 or 2 things. I actually felt better & looked better so that says something right there!

    Thx, FJ!

Heh, while I’m on the same boat (willing to pay a slight premium) …4x is a little much. That’s when I’d throw up my 2 middle fingers and buy a juicy piece of steak. Still, supplement testing is coming in the future. Watch and see (don’t forget who predicted that shit) ;)

I would agree, a nice juicy steak would be better, but if I had to spend the money on the supplements, I’d pay a ton more for really good supplements than cheaper, crappy products.

I’ll be sure to notify everyone that you predicted it when it happens. :)

You might be onto something here. Even IF we pay a premium for the good stuff you might actually end up saving some cash since you’re only buy shit you need (and works). Hmm…

I’m definitely not a fit jerk, however I have read about the placebo effect earlier and was pretty happy to find out that how it is helping the people. As far as my opinion is concerned…I’m willing to pay premium price, for the simple fact that I know that I’ll be having something that has been tested and approved.

Hey fj, great outspoken post, as always! I agree with you on all this – I personally believe that supplements are absolutely un-needed. I may be only 19 and that’s why I think they’re unnecessary and expensive, but I don’t believe I’m ever gonna have any use for them. They’re just bs. You can get enough vitamins and nutrients from foods you eat! Just think of salmon and whole eggs… I don’t even believe you need much protein to build muscle! Just sticking to whole, natural foods and eating till the point of satisfaction and using low rep, high weight sets and explosive exercises… Now THAT’S exercise, doncha think??

Of course you’re not, that’s because there is only one FitJerk. Moi. And yes, it seems that people ARE willing to shell out a few extra bucks for shit that actually works. Props for dropping by.

    @Clement
Only thing I disagree is the fact where you mention you don’t need much protein to build muscle. Positive nitrogen balance is one thing, but to gain sheer mass you need to EAT sheer mass. It doesn’t work any other way.

Well it does… it’s called steroids. But I don’t want bitch tits and I’m guessing you don’t either.

Mm, yeah you’re right of course! To gain weight, eat a surplus of calories. What I meant was, you don’t have to specifically eat a “protein food” like an extra slab of beef or chicken breast, or a protein shake, after a meal of “carb foods” like speghetti. Most ppl end up with this sort of protein guilt when they don’t realise that you actually have a lot of protein in pasta and quinoa, etc. This makes them eat so much they end up gaining fat! And I don’t have much time for energy drinks like greens drinks either. I just think it’s unnecessary and you should push yourself naturally. sure, they may make you perform better, due to psychology that you’ve taken an “enhancer” or something but… Just doesn’t work for me!

I just started using Jack3d before my hockey games and it works amazing. I have endless amounts of energy but it taste is tough to take. No Xplode and Superpump tastse better but don’t work as well. Any suggestions on another pre workout that works as good as jack3d but tastes better?

From what I know, Jack3d is caffeine + beta-Alanine. So why not just buy caffeine pills (very inexpensive shit) and get yourself some Cell Rush which has Creatine to boot. This will definitely kick up your hockey game to another level: http://flawlessfitnessbook.com/blog/supplement-review-cell-rush-by-aaefx/

Just be warned that from what I’ve experienced… Cell Rush is potent shit. Don’t be a hero and take more than 1 serving.
